House of Johann is the absorbing, often heart-breaking story of an actual farm family living in the small village of Oberzerf Germany from 1827 to1845. Like many people found in rural villages all over Germany, Johann Rauls, his wife Maria, and their seven children work together in house, barn and fields, maintaining a strong union as they celebrate holidays, festivals, births, and marriages or deal with the struggles and illnesses that arise. Better off than many, the Rauls have much to be grateful for. But soon after the birth of their last daughter Leni, the strong family bond begins to unravel when an all-too-common tragedy occurs. The death of wife and mother Maria affects family members in unimagined ways. Johann, distracted by his despair at losing Maria, ignores his grieving children and hardly notices their misery. With the disruption of their former happy life, the brothers and sisters try to bring the family back together. Relatives and other villagers aid their efforts, especially their Aunt Mari and Uncle Nikolaus. Meanwhile, distant cousin Eva takes advantage of their situation, intent on becoming the second wife of Johann. Along with her three older brothers young Leni, who is growing up to be a strong and intelligent girl, makes the best of it when Cousin Eva takes over the Rauls household, but sisters Anna Maria and Lis rebel - with unexpected consequences. House of Johann displays German village life in rich, well-researched detail; the narrative is rich in cultural history as well as an insightful exploration into each of its characters. In addition, these are also the years when frustration with the Kingdom of Prussia’s rule of the Rhineland tempted many village dwellers to leave their beloved homeland for a distant place known as Amerika.

I laughed, I cried, but mostly I just turned page after page as I immersed myself in 19th century Oberzerf and vicinity, in the German Rhineland. The characters in HOUSE OF JOHANN are vivid and compelling. I feel as if I know them so very well, each and every one, even though there are many of them. The setting shines with specific cultural detail of the period and, at the same time, richly imagined nuance is layered on top so I didn't feel as if the culture was being recited to me but rather was brought forward out of the narrative. How can one not love the recounting of the attachment to a pet pig or not weep at the loss of a beloved parent who soothes all wounds, real or imagined. As a person of Rhineland ancestry, I received a deep look into the BEING of my ancestors. I was completely immersed, emotionally rather than academically. The use of fiction to make this happen is an inspired choice, I believe. It was if I was watching "Downton Abbey" except that the location was changed to 19th century village life in Germany's Rhineland among the common people, MY people. And it made me ever-so proud!

House of Johann Yesterday Rhineland Volume 1 Kathi Gosz 9781535012478 Books Reviews
I loved to read "House of Johann". I grew up in the vicinity of Oberzerf - and "House of Johann" opened a new view on my homeland's history. Furthermore, I feel Kathi's passion for the story and a lot of empathy when she breathed life into the names of her ancestors taken from genealogical tables and graphs. Great work!!!
My favourite parts are
(1) the journey of the Rauls Kids to Serrig to see the transfer of the coffin of King Johann of Luxemburg to the Klause of Kastel, especially the jokes on the blind king's battle against the English and Leni's meeting with the artist where Kathi also explained the use of the same name for more than one child in the family (chapter 11).
(2) the part where Leni challenges her teacher with regard to the role of women in the 18th century Prussian society (chapter 13).
In any case, I hope to find the sequel of "House of Johann" soon.
Hit home, she could have been writing about my family.
Very good. Got to see how life was for my great-grandfather in Serrig, Germany.
Beautifully written story of a courageous family living in Germany in the 1800's. I was overwhelmed by the historical accuracy presented in this book. The Rauls family became "my" family and touched my heart.
This book presents history in a very enjoyable and interesting format. I (the reader) was drawn into the story as if I were actually part of the Rails family. Having genealogical roots in rural Germany I was intrigued with what everyday life was like in the 1830s and 1840s. My great grandparents came to America about that time. House of Johann was an enjoyable experience. Thank you Kathie Gosz.
JOHN HENNING
This well-written historical novel came to life for me as soon as I met the characters. When tragedy affected the entire family of Johann Rauls during the early years of the 19th century, some family members moved on from their sorrow while others continued to let it rule their lives. In addition, the author presented a period of German history and culture that I knew nothing about, introducing each chapter with tidbits from the customs of the time, something I really enjoyed. Everyday events in the lives of this family, from heart-wrenching to smile-producing, gave real insight into the characters. I found this novel difficult to put down as I got to know each member of the Rauls family and learned about small villages in Germany in the 1800s.
What a wonderful book. As it says on the front, Yesterday's Rhineland Series, I can't wait for the next book. Thank you, Kathi, for telling a story about our family. Now that I have finished my husband can't wait to start reading about his 4X great grandfather and his life.
